Money questions come early when you plan Purnululu: park entry, camp nights, fuel from Kununurra or Halls Creek, and whether a commercial lodge is worth it versus Park Stay. This article gives orientation figures and structure — not a live price list. Fees change. Always re-check Explore Parks WA and Park Stay WA before you pay or drive.

Official camping in the park is Kurrajong (north) and Walardi (south) through parkstay.dbca.wa.gov.au. Private Bellburn-area lodges are commercial operators with their own rates and inclusions. This website is independent and unofficial. We are not DBCA, not Park Stay, and not affiliated with any lodge. We do not take bookings for camps or rooms.

You are visiting Gija and Jaru Country. Paying correct fees and camping only in legal sites is part of respect — not a bureaucratic annoyance. Illegal bush camps to “save money” damage Country and can earn fines that cost more than a booked night.

Budget the invisible lines too: Spring Creek Track fuel burn, water, heat-ready gear, and the fact that two nights is the practical minimum if you want both ends on foot. A cheap one-night raid that fails both ends is not a saving.

Park entry fees (orientation)

Western Australia national park entry fees are set by government and published through official channels. For Purnululu planning conversations, vehicle entry has often been in the region of $17 per vehicle for a standard period, with motorcycles often around $10 — but you must re-check Explore Parks WA for the figure that applies on your dates, including any holiday or multi-park pass arrangements.

Entry fee and camping fee are different line items. Paying for a camp night does not automatically mean you can ignore entry requirements, and vice versa. Read the official wording for what is included in each product.

Keep receipts or digital confirmations offline. Coverage inside the park is intermittent; arguing at a trailhead without proof helps nobody.

Camping at Kurrajong and Walardi

Kurrajong serves the north (Echidna and nearby walks). Walardi serves the south (Domes, Cathedral and nearby walks). Both are unpowered Park Stay sites with simple facilities: pit toilets, treat bore water as directed, carry rubbish out, no campfires. Sites are typically unallocated within the booked campground — pick a vacant site and follow current rules.

As orientation only, nightly rates have often been around $15 per adult, $12.50 concession and $4.50 per child. Re-check Park Stay WA for live rates, minimum stays if any, cancellation rules and generator conditions. Kurrajong has designated generator areas; Walardi has none — confirm when you book.

Book the end you will walk at dawn. A cheap night at the wrong end that forces a hot transfer before every walk is false economy. See our north versus south article for base choice.

Park Stay WA versus Bellburn lodges

Park Stay WA (parkstay.dbca.wa.gov.au) is the official booking system for DBCA campgrounds. Use it for Kurrajong and Walardi. Screenshots and confirmation emails are your friend.

Bellburn-area lodges and similar commercial stays are private operators. They may package tents, meals or flight links depending on season and product. Rates are operator-set and usually higher than unpowered camping — you are paying for services, not a secret free camp. Book through the operator or channels they nominate.

This website is not a booking agent for either product. We do not hold inventory, we do not take deposits, and we are not “partners” with lodges or Park Stay. If a third-party OTA listing looks stale, verify with the operator or official site before you rely on it.

What your budget should also include

Fuel: none in the park. Price a full loop from your gateway with margin for corrugations and the internal north–south transfer (typically around 80 minutes dry). Warmun, Halls Creek and Kununurra are the usual fuel logic — not a mythical park bowser.

Water, food and heat gear: multi-litre carrying capacity, electrolytes, UPF clothing, PLB or sat messenger for remote travel. Gear cost is optional to buy new; water volume is not optional to carry.

Time cost: Spring Creek is about 53 km unsealed each way (often 1.5–3 hours). Under-budgeting nights forces expensive fatigue — rushed exits, missed walks, or a return trip next year to “do it properly.”

Sample orientation maths (not a quote)

Example structure only — replace every number with live official rates before you travel. Suppose two adults, two camp nights, one vehicle entry period: entry orientation (~$17 vehicle) + camping orientation (2 nights × 2 adults × ~$15) is only the park line. Add fuel from Kununurra or Halls Creek, food, and any lodge upgrade.

Three nights for a slower or photography trip multiplies camp costs but often improves walk quality. One night halves camp cost and usually halves the experience if you wanted both ends.

Concession and child rates exist in the official structure — use Park Stay’s categories honestly. Mis-declaring ages or concessions is not a travel hack.

Peak season, refunds and full camps

May–September is peak for a reason: more reliable dry-season access and high demand. Book early. If camps are full, do not invent bush sites. Base in gateway towns, watch Park Stay for cancellations, or consider commercial lodges and scenic flights as different products.

Read cancellation policies on Park Stay and with lodge operators before peak-season deposits. Weather, track closures and personal illness happen — know what you can reclaim.

Wet-season closure is commonly around November–April (re-check official). A cheap wet-season “deal” that coincides with park closure is not a deal.

What we are never affiliated with

We are not DBCA, not Explore Parks WA staff, not Park Stay support, and not a Bellburn or any other lodge. We do not process payments for entry, camps or rooms. We do not mark up official fees.

Affiliate links elsewhere on this site (for example some gateway accommodation or gear searches) are separate commercial relationships and never apply to park entry or Park Stay camping. Park fees go through official channels only.

If anything on this page disagrees with the official site on the day you book, the official site wins. Re-check live. Visitor Centre planning contact when staffed: (08) 9168 4295.
