Park Stay WA. This is an independent unofficial guide — not
affiliated with DBCA, Parks and Wildlife Service, the WA Government, or Gija and Jaru Traditional Owners.
Emergency: 000.
Planning order: high-clearance 4WD + fuel → register at the Visitor Centre → camp at the end
you will walk at dawn → one cool-morning walk block (north or south) → heat rest → optional transfer.
Two nights is the practical minimum for both ends. Dry season only (about April–November — weather and roads
permitting).
1. Cultural respect (Gija and Jaru Country)
Purnululu sits on Country of the Gija and Jaru people of the East Kimberley.
Stay on marked tracks. Do not climb beehive domes or enter closed cultural areas.
Leave no trace — carry all rubbish out. No pets. No campfires.
Drones are banned (drone-free area). This planner does not speak for Traditional Owners.
2. Before you leave base (checklist)
High-clearance 4WD confirmed (2WD may be refused) — single-axle towables only if towing (check official)
Fuel margin for 300+ km rough driving — nearest fuel Warmun (N of turn-off) or Halls Creek (S); none in park
Water, food and rubbish plan (carry out); treat camp bore water
PLB / satellite communicator; tell someone your plan and expected exit day
Park Stay WA bookings for Kurrajong and/or Walardi (or commercial lodge via visitor centre channels)
alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au checked the morning you leave sealed roads
Entry fee process understood (pay official channels only — re-check live rates)
Offline screenshots of bookings, maps and alerts while you still have signal
3. Access — Spring Creek Track
Unsealed track (about 53 km planning figure, typically 1.5–3 hours). Corrugations, dust, creek crossings, low
speed environment. If you break down, stay with the vehicle. Coverage is intermittent Optus at best.
☐ Tyre pressures reduced for corrugations (per vehicle manual); re-inflate for highway later
☐ Recovery kit / tools; spare water for vehicle as well as people
☐ No dual-axle caravans/campers plan (leave at highway facilities if available — check current options)
☐ Kununurra (~304 km) or Halls Creek (~160 km) services planned honestly
4. North vs south decision tree
South (classic first-timer)
The Domes — short beehive loop
Cathedral Gorge — amphitheatre
Piccaninny Creek Lookout (if energy)
Base: Walardi (no generators)
Longer: The Window / Whip Snake (fit, multi-night)
North (slot light)
Echidna Chasm — main northern walk
Mini Palms — longer / harder only if fit
Osmand / Bloodwoods lookouts (heat days)
Base: Kurrajong (generators only where/when allowed)
Homestead / Escarpment — re-check open status
Arrival day only
Register at Visitor Centre
Set camp — do not stack a hard gorge
Kungkalanayi Lookout for orientation / sunset
Sleep early for cool morning walks
Turn-around rules
Heat / fatigue rising → lookouts only
Rain in catchment → leave narrow slots
Partial day still counts as success
~80 min internal transfer N↔S (dry planning figure)
5. Walk decision blocks
First visit / two nights (recommended)Night Walardi → Domes + Cathedral cool morning → transfer → night Kurrajong → Echidna cool morning → exit.
One night onlyPick one end well (usually south). Do not invent both ends after a late Spring Creek arrival.
Extreme heat dayLookouts only (Osmand, Bloodwoods, Kungkalanayi) or rest at camp. Official walking guidance ≈ 1 L water per hour.
No suitable 4WDScenic flight from Kununurra / Halls Creek for aerial context — not a substitute for multi-night ground time later.
6. Fees orientation (re-check live — not a permanent fee table)
Park entry (Explore Parks WA)
Standard vehicle (≤12): about $17 / concession $10
Large vehicle (>12): about $8 pp / concession $3.50
Motorcycle: about $10
