Kurrajong or Walardi booked out: Plan B without inventing bush camps

If Park Stay WA shows Kurrajong or Walardi full, choose gateway beds, shift dates or a scenic flight day — do not invent bush camping or raid both ends from the highway in heat.

Decision: if Kurrajong or Walardi is booked out on Park Stay WA, do not invent bush camping inside Purnululu and do not “just day-trip both ends from the highway.” Your real options are gateway beds (Kununurra, Halls Creek, Warmun), shift dates, commercial lodge products if available, or a scenic flight day — then try Park Stay again.

Official in-park camping for ordinary self-drive visitors is the Park Stay campgrounds: Kurrajong (north) and Walardi (south). They are unpowered, simple and finite. Peak dry season fills. That is a booking problem, not a permission to freestyle a campsite among the domes.

Not walked — planning from Explore Parks WA / DBCA published notes, Park Stay WA patterns and related public sources. Re-check live fees, site rules and park open status before you commit money or kilometres. This site is independent and unofficial on Gija and Jaru Country.

What “booked out” actually means

Kurrajong serves the northern cluster (Echidna, Mini Palms, lookouts). Walardi serves the southern icons (Domes, Cathedral and related walks). When either is full, you have lost the cool-morning base that makes that end practical — not a minor lodging preference.

Private Bellburn-area lodges are commercial products with their own booking rules and prices. They are not free overflow for Park Stay. Treat them as a separate Plan B if they suit your budget and dates — never as an assumed backup.

Peak dry season (often May–September — re-check official) is when calendars go red. Shoulder weeks can still fill around school holidays and tour churn.

Valid Plan B moves (in order of honesty)

Shift dates first if your Kimberley window allows it. A Walardi night two days later beats a dehydrated Domes loop from the highway “because the calendar was full.”

Gateway beds in Kununurra, Halls Creek or Warmun keep you legal and rested while you watch Park Stay cancellations or accept a scenic flight day over the massif. Flights remove Spring Creek for an aerial overview; they do not replace a ground walk if that was the goal — they buy time and perspective.

If you later secure one campground only, base-match the dawn walk to that end. Do not promise Echidna and Cathedral from a single heat-day transfer after a highway sleep.

What not to do when camps are full

Do not invent bush camping, pull-offs or “quiet spots behind the dunes.” That is how people break park rules and create safety problems on Country that is already under visitor pressure.

Do not stack Spring Creek in + both ends + Spring Creek out from a gateway bed on a heat day. North–south is typically ~80 minutes dry inside the park; the track is ~53 km each way; walking water still runs at roughly 1 L per person per hour in extreme heat. The maths fails.

Do not bring dogs “just for the gateway night” into a park plan that ends with them locked in a vehicle at a trailhead — dogs are banned in the park. Drones are banned. No fuel inside either.

If you only get one night later

One secured night is a gift: pick south (Walardi — Domes/Cathedral) or north (Kurrajong — Echidna) and protect the cool morning. Arrival day after Spring Creek is orientation and camp setup, not a dual-icon finish.

Fees for entry and camping change — orientation figures on other pages are not permanent truth. Re-check Explore Parks WA and Park Stay WA when you book and again before you drive.

Authority for closures and track status remains DBCA / Explore Parks WA / alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au. A full campground does not override a closed park.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can we camp anywhere if Kurrajong and Walardi are full?

No. Do not invent bush camps. Use gateway accommodation, shift dates, consider commercial lodge products if available, or a scenic flight day — then re-check Park Stay WA.

Is a day-trip from Kununurra the right Plan B?

Rarely as a dual-end raid. A single-end attempt from a gateway bed is still a very long day after Spring Creek Track. Prefer shifted camp dates or a flight day over forcing both icons from the highway in heat.

Should we book Walardi or Kurrajong if only one is free?

Book the end that matches your non-negotiable cool-morning walk: Walardi for Domes/Cathedral, Kurrajong for Echidna. Do not assume you will “quickly” do the other end the same afternoon.
