Things to do in Purnululu
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with Explore Parks WA / DBCA
Most first visits revolve around the southern classics — The Domes and Cathedral Gorge— or the northern Echidna Chasm, not both ends on the same heat day after Spring Creek Track. Lookouts are the honest Plan B; Mini Palms and longer southern walks are multi-night energy. Optional commercial scenic flights are a different product. Do not try to collect every walk on a first visit.

Cool-morning rule
Pick one primary end per cool morning (south Domes + Cathedral, or north Echidna). Do not collect every walk on a first heat day after Spring Creek Track.
Heat / energy bail-out
Lookouts, shade and camp rest beat a forced Mini Palms or Window in extreme heat. Bail-outs are competence — not failure.
Two-night filter
Both ends properly needs two nights in-park (or honest one-end focus). Scenic flight is a different product; harder southern walks need multi-night bases and cool conditions.
- 1
The Domes
South · easy–moderate · iconic first-visit
Close-up beehive sandstone — the classic Bungle Bungle first-visit walk for many self-drivers. Short on the map, still heat-exposed and rocky. Cool morning from a southern base (Walardi when booked).
- 2
Cathedral Gorge
South · moderate · first-visit high value
Southern amphitheatre classic — cathedral-scale walls and acoustics. Pair with The Domes on the same cool morning if energy allows; do not stack Echidna the same heat day after Spring Creek.
- 3
Echidna Chasm
North · moderate · heat-managed · light windows
Main northern slot — palms, narrow walls, mid-day light glow for photographers who start early. Short distance, serious heat and rock. Base at Kurrajong for a dawn push.
- 4
Mini Palms Gorge
North · harder · multi-night energy
Longer, more physical northern gorge than Echidna. Treat as a separate filter for fit groups on multi-night stays — not a free add-on after a late Spring Creek arrival.
- 5
Lookouts (Plan B / recovery)
Both ends · easier · competence bail-out
Osmand, Bloodwoods, Kungkalanayi and similar signed lookouts when heat, fatigue or time mean you skip gorge walks. Still carry water; edges and sun are real.
- 6
Longer southern walks (when fit & cool)
South · longer / harder · second-visit energy
Piccaninny Creek Lookout, The Window and Whip Snake Gorge for multi-night bases and honest fitness. Status- and heat-critical — never impulse-add after a dual-end transfer day.
- 7
Cultural respect on Gija & Jaru Country
Year-round · etiquette first · not optional
World Heritage landscape with living Traditional Owner connection. Stay on marked trails, no dome climbing, no drones, leave no trace. This guide does not speak for Traditional Owners.
- 8
Scenic flight (optional commercial)
Commercial · seasonal · Kununurra / Halls Creek context
Aerial beehive context without Spring Creek Track — fixed-wing or helicopter products from gateway towns. Operators and schedules change. Not a substitute for multi-night ground time if you want gorges on foot.
- 9
Access, fees & two-night realism
Logistics · booking · not a walk list
Spring Creek Track (~53 km high-clearance 4WD), no fuel in-park, Park Stay WA for Kurrajong / Walardi, entry fees on Explore Parks WA. One night usually means one end well; two nights is the practical minimum for both.
