The Window

Area: Southern Purnululu (Domes · Cathedral · Walardi)

A longer southern walk to a natural window formation on Gija and Jaru Country. Not a casual add-on after Cathedral — treat it as a dedicated half-day with early start, multi-litre water and turn-around discipline from a Walardi base. Skip it if heat, fitness or official status is wrong; Domes and Cathedral already make the south worth the trip.

  • Longer southern walk (re-check grade and status)
  • Half day typical
  • ~6 km (re-check officially)
  • Effort: hard
  • Best for: Fit walkers with a full cool morning and solid heat discipline

Distance, grade, time, open/closed status and heat conditions change — re-check Explore Parks WA / DBCA and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au before you go.

Where you start

The Window trailhead (signed south)

Confirm current status, distance and grade on Explore Parks WA before committing. Southern trail network after registration; sturdy footwear and full heat kit mandatory.

How to get there

  1. Southern park base (Walardi overnight strongly preferred) after Spring Creek Track entry and registration.
  2. Do not start late. Heat kills margins on longer walks.
  3. Allow rest after Domes/Cathedral days rather than stacking The Window the same afternoon.
  4. No fuel in park; full vehicle and walking water plans before you leave camp.
  5. PLB or satellite communicator recommended — intermittent mobile only.
  6. Re-check alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au if weather has been unstable.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Leave early with multi-litre water, electrolytes, hat, long sleeves and PLB.
  2. Stay on the marked trail the whole way.
  3. Photograph The Window from safe public viewpoints only — no risky scrambles for a frame.
  4. Set a turn-around time and keep it; the feature is not worth an emergency extraction.
  5. Watch the slowest person in the group; group speed is their speed on the return.
  6. Rest in shade when available; keep eating and drinking on a schedule.
  7. Return the marked route; report serious hazards to rangers when you can.

What The Window walk asks of you

The Window is a half-day class southern walk to a natural rock window — longer, hotter and more committing than Domes or Cathedral. Published figures often sit near 6 km — re-check Explore Parks WA. Expect rocky ground, sun and the need for a real water plan.

It rewards fit multi-night visitors who already understand Purnululu heat. It punishes arrival-day optimism and “we will just see how we go” water loads.

Gija and Jaru Country: marked trail only, no climbing for photos, pack out everything you bring.

When to go

First light from Walardi in cool dry-season weather is the realistic window. Extreme heat days are a skip. Storm risk means rethink — confined and rocky country is unforgiving when weather turns.

Place it after you have secured Domes and Cathedral, not instead of them on a one-night dash. One-night trips usually should not force The Window.

If official status is closed, accept the decision and enjoy other southern walks or lookouts.

Crowds, pairing and bail-out judgment

Crowds thin compared with Cathedral at 10 am, which can create false confidence. Remoteness still applies. Carry emergency communications and keep the group together.

Piccaninny Lookout is a shorter related southern option when you want creek-country views without a full Window day. Whip Snake is a further step up for experienced parties only.

Turning around before the feature is good judgment when heat or fatigue rises. The park is full of other walks; a rescue is a bad souvenir.

Extra tips

  • Best as day two or three of a multi-night stay, not arrival day after Spring Creek Track.
  • Do Domes and Cathedral first on the trip if time is limited — The Window is depth, not the only southern prize.
  • UHF Channel 4 duplex often cited south — still carry PLB.
  • Cool dry-season weeks only for most visitors; shoulder heat is a valid reason to skip.
  • Pair planning with Piccaninny Lookout across separate cool periods, not as a heat double-header.
  • Tell camp neighbours or a written note your plan and expected return if travelling small-party.
  • Re-check every metric officially the morning you go.

Often paired with Cathedral Gorge— only if energy and weather allow.
